Country Fried Steak

Country Fried Steak Ingredients:

4 Minute Steaks

1 cup Buttermilk

1 Egg

2 cups Flour

1 tsp Garlic powder

1 tsp Onion powder

1/2 tsp Salt

1/2 tsp Cayenne pepper (or more to taste)

Avocado or Vegetable oil, for frying

Gravy Ingredients:

1 cup Heavy whipping cream

1 cup Whole milk

¼  tsp Salt

1 tsp Jarred bouillon

Country Fried Steak Instructions

  1. Put the minute steaks in a gallon-sized plastic bag. Seal the bag tightly, then use a meat tenderizer to pound the steaks to about ¼” thick. Remove them from the bag.
  2. In a shallow bowl, mix the buttermilk and egg.
  3. In another shallow bowl, mix the flour, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and cayenne.
  4. Prepare the minute steaks by first dipping each side in the flour to get a light coating. Then, dip each side in the buttermilk mixture. Finally, dip the steaks back in the flour again. You may need to repeat this process once more so that the flour completely coats the steaks. Reserve the leftover flour mixture.
  5. In a cast iron skillet on the stove, heat about ¼” of oil to 325 degrees. When the correct temperature is reached, place 2 steaks in the oil at a time, frying for 2 minutes (or until brown), then flipping and frying for another 2 minute (or until brown).
  6. Remove the steaks from the oil and repeat the process until they are all cooked. Set aside.

Gravy Instructions

  1. Remove all of the oil from the cast iron skillet except for 3 tbsp. Put the pan over a medium heat.
  2. Add 5 tbsp of the reserved flour mixture into the pan with the oil and whisk until a paste forms. Continue cooking the paste until it turns a dark brown color.
  3. Add the whole milk and heavy cream into the skillet, whisking continuously as you do so. Continue whisking until the gravy begins to thicken. At this point, add the salt and the bouillon. Continue whisking until gravy reaches your desired consistency.
  4. To serve, place the country fried steak on a plate, then spoon gravy over the top of it. Enjoy!

Notes

  • If you need to keep the steaks warm while making the gravy, you can set the oven to 200 degrees Fahrenheit and keep them on a baking tray in the oven while making the gravy.
